Magic only can have a secondary role in PiLife in the beginning. It may gain importance with more private dungeons.

Concept

The idea is roughly borrowed by MagicTheGathering, having the player as "controller" of each of his "cards" (=Entities) which can be created and destroyed individually. Philosophically, the players are regarded as "gods" who act through their creations, magic has to be granted by the "god" individually under certain circumstances and cannot be achieved by the creation alone.

Maps are anti-magic by default, but designated areas of magic can be enabled in them, which are:

  • fire (red)
  • water (blue)
  • earth (brown)
  • air (purple)
  • gold/metal (orange)

Magic is represented by mana. The player receives mana, visualized as coloured balls, under circumstances like when a specific creature is in a special location for a defined length of time. This means, the creation earns the mana for the creator.

Mana can be used through entities in the world, like runes/items or characters.

In a more technical way, magic features are defined by cost, condition and effect. A Mana-activated feature can be attached to any entity, but the activating entity needs to be able to store sufficient mana.

Play-wise this works like that: The player is granted a "soul" entity in the beginning - simply a camera to move through the world. When he moves his soul into a fire shrine, he gains 1 red mana per hour, which is represented as ball with some volume. The player can create a human avatar who has a mind which acts as container with space for 3 mana, for instance. The avatar can meditate, a time which the player can use to transfer mana to the avatar. Having 3 mana in possession, the avatar can cast a spell for this cost. The player also can charge items with mana. Depending on the magical features attached, different things can happen.

Only players who were given rights by community vote can attach magical features to entities, who can also ask for money for doing that. Magical features are coded seperatedly and must be approved by community vote as content addition.

Effects

As mana is treated like any other entity, it can be created and destroyed, stolen and granted, combined through crafting and dropped. Stealing mana therefor can be a valid and good tactic to interrupt a caster and turn mana against its "owner" before the player can recall it.

Having defined features that can be assigned to anything with or without costs (mana nay be only one cost) opens indefinite possibilites to combine and play.

As maps have to be specifically unlocked for magic application, it can be played with different settings, with or without magic, or just with specific colours.
